2005. Investigating Upper Mesopotamian Households Using Micro-Archaeological Techniques. BAR International Series, No. S1368. Oxford: Archaeopress. 234 pages; 120 figures, maps, plans, drawings and photographs; Appendices of data; Turkish abstract.
Abstract: In this work the author studies domestic life at two urban sites in Upper Mesopotamia, Titris Höyük and Kazane Höyük, and, for comparison, a rural settlement, Tilbes Höyük. The author integrated archaeological and geological techniques (more frequently used at prehistoric sites) and developed a method that she refers to as “micro-archaeology” or “micro-debris analysis.” The book provides instructions on how to take and analyze micro-debris samples. The case examples discussed here come from Early Bronze Age sites in Upper Mesopotamia. A total of 370 micro-debris samples were taken from a diversity of contexts including public spaces and wealthy and commoner households. This data is used to test current models of domestic economy, family structure, house types, and residential organization within rural and urban communities.

The best clue for locating historic cemeteries in America is the presence of periwinkle. Can you spot the single, marble gravestone in this photo of an ante-bellum slave cemetery in Virginia ?
